Medicare in Los Angeles

What to know before you compare plans in Los Angeles County

Los Angeles offers dozens of Advantage plans, many Dual Special Needs and Medi-Medi Plans, every Medigap carrier in California and the full Part D lineup. Plans work through delegated medical groups, so the same plan can mean UCLA doctors in Westwood and a different group in the Valley; Cedars-Sinai, UCLA, Keck and City of Hope each contract on their own terms, and Kaiser is reached only through Senior Advantage.

We compare what is sold at your ZIP code, confirm your doctors and their medical group, and check whether a Medicare Savings Program or Medi-Medi Plan applies.

Care close to home

Major care in the area includes:

  • Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles & West LA (Senior Advantage only)
  • UCLA Health
  • Cedars-Sinai
  • Keck Medicine of USC
  • Providence (Saint John’s, Holy Cross, Tarzana)
  • City of Hope
  • LA General Medical Center
  • VA Greater Los Angeles

Plan networks differ — we check that your doctors and hospital are covered before you enroll.

When you can enroll

Turning 65? Your Initial Enrollment Period is the 7 months around your birthday. Already on Medicare? The Annual Election Period is Oct 15–Dec 7, Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment runs Jan 1–Mar 31, and California’s Medigap birthday rule gives you 60 days from your birthday each year to switch supplements without health questions.

Your options

Which kind of plan fits you in Los Angeles?

Medicare Advantage

All-in-one Part C plans, often $0 premium, built on a county network — the choice of about half of California, and the one that changed most for 2026.

How Advantage works

Medicare Supplement

Medigap pairs with Original Medicare and works with any provider nationwide — UCLA, Stanford, Cedars, City of Hope, or your doctor in Arizona — with California’s birthday rule to switch every year.

How Medigap works

Part D drug plans

Standalone drug coverage chosen around your medications and pharmacy. 2026 out-of-pocket cap: $2,100.

How Part D works

Kaiser Permanente

Senior Advantage is its own world: everything in one system, and no Medigap route in. When it fits, and when it doesn’t.

Questions from Los Angeles

Frequently asked questions

Which Medicare plans are available in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles County typically offers a deep Medicare Advantage menu, every Medigap carrier in California, and the full Part D lineup. Availability is set by county and changes each plan year. For 2026 Anthem’s Advantage PPOs left and Aetna reduced its plans here.

Does UCLA or Cedars-Sinai take my Advantage plan?

Each system contracts with some Medicare Advantage plans and not others, and the lists change every October. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy there is no network to check, except Kaiser, which is reached only through Kaiser Senior Advantage. We confirm your doctors before you enroll.

Can I keep Kaiser?

Kaiser Permanente is a closed system: you keep Kaiser doctors on Medicare through Kaiser Senior Advantage, not through Original Medicare and a Medigap policy. If you are leaving Kaiser, or joining it, that is the first decision, and we walk through it plainly.
