The Central Coast: what shapes the choice here
Between Ventura and Santa Cruz the Medicare map is a string of one- and two-system towns. Santa Barbara runs on Cottage and Sansum; Ventura County on Community Memorial, Dignity St. John’s and the county system, with Kaiser clinics but no Kaiser hospital; San Luis Obispo on Tenet and Dignity; the Monterey Peninsula on Montage and Salinas on Salinas Valley Health. Advantage menus are moderate and the medical groups small.
Retirees here travel — to Stanford, UCLA and Cedars for specialty care, and to children elsewhere — which is why Medigap’s any-provider access is worth its premium for many, and why California’s birthday rule matters: it lets you move to a cheaper carrier every year without underwriting.
What to watch: the Central Coast has fewer Advantage plans than Los Angeles or the Bay Area and fewer medical groups, so a plan that looks broad statewide can be narrow here. Several counties have one dominant system — Cottage in Santa Barbara, Montage on the Monterey Peninsula, Tenet and Dignity in San Luis Obispo — and Original Medicare with a Medigap policy is a common choice for exactly that reason.
Counties: Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, Monterey, Santa Cruz.
